1. To get seeds to germinate quickly, snip the end of each seed with a pair of nail clippers and soak in water over night. Then plant and watch them germinate in just a few days.
2. Add crushed eggshells to your soil. The eggshells provide calcium and keep unwanted critters away.
3. Clean your hairbrush and lay human hair around your plants to keep rabbits away.
4. During cold snaps and freezing temperatures, cover outdoor plants with painter’s plastic. It functions like a greenhouse and keeps frost from killing plants.
5. Place an aluminum pan filled with beer in your garden to deter slugs.
6. To stop mosquitoes and other insect larvae from breeding in birdbaths or rainwater barrels, put a few drops of vegetable oil on top of the water. It forms a film on the water’s surface so larvae can’t lay eggs. It also doesn’t bother the birds.
7. Hang an aluminum pan in fruit trees to keep birds from eating the fruit. Our feathered friends don’t like the sun’s reflection in the pans.
8. Spray cabbage and other vegetables targeted by caterpillars with onion juice. Grate an onion, mix it with water and then spray your veggies.
9. Add coffee grounds to plants and flowers that won’t bloom, and ivy that is not spreading quickly. It helps the flowers blossom and gets the ivy growing.
10. Use aspirin and water to fend off aphids and other sucking insects, as well as promote strong plant growth. Mix one aspirin and water in a spray bottle and spray plants.
