MINERAL WELLS — Among the many outstanding athletes within the Mineral Wells High School football program, there are those who just simply stand out from the crowd. This week’s spotlight football players are Jonathan Hammer and Cayson Wells for their remarkable abilities and contributions to the team.
JONATHAN HAMMER
Hammer is a senior and the starting safety, making him the deepest player on the field where his job is to prevent anyone from getting behind him and scoring a touchdown. He is also a wide receiver where he spends his time blocking defenders and completing passes.
Hammer has been a part of the varsity team since his sophomore year and said he is ready to have a great final season.
“The Rams have a lot of potential to be a great team and, without a doubt, have the potential to be a playoff team,” Hammer said.
Hammer said he’s also onboard with the new practice and game schedule. The Rams are now practicing from 6:30 – 8:30 a.m., instead of after school as they’ve done in the past.
“I really enjoy the morning practices because it’s nowhere near as hot as the afternoon and practicing in the morning gives me more time to work on extra things after school,” he explained.
Hammer said the preseason scrimmages red flagged areas where the team can do better.
“I believed everyone made mistakes and has room for improvement,” he said. “I also think there were good things that happened and that those good things should be maintained as we also fix what we did wrong. By continuing to work hard and trusting our coaches as well as our teammates that we can continue to improve for future games.”
And, his favorite part of football?

Head Coach Seth Hobbs said Hammer is an asset both on and off the field.
“Jonathan is an extremely talented kid and football is only a small part of his abilities,” said Hobbs. “A student athlete that is involved in as many different activities as Jonathan is, while still managing to handle his schoolwork is quite a deal. He’s a special kid and we are lucky to have him on our team.”
CAYSONWELLS
Wells is also a senior and is the starting right tackle where he’s tasked with creating space for the running back so the team can get more yards. He’s been a part of the varsity team since his freshman year and is excited to see how his senior season plays out.
“I think that we have a lot to prove since we’re such a young team,” said Wells. “But I believe if we can get a few things figured out we can go on a playoff run.”
Like his teammate, Wells said the morning practices make for better conditions and better performance.
“I like practicing in the morning because the weather is much cooler and helps us save our energy for the Friday night football games,” he explained.
Wells kept a positive outlook on the team’s last two scrimmages.
“I think we made mistakes in both, but that there were also a lot of good things that happened in both of the scrimmages as well,” he said. “I feel good about them overall. We had good runs throughout each scrimmage, but we need to work on our tackling as a whole.”
Wells said the tight bond he has with his team members is his favorite aspect of the game.
“The friends you make over the years and going through all the ups and downs together with my team,” he noted.
Hobbs said Wells determination to advance his abilities is impressive.
“I am extremely proud of Cayson’s improvement this year,” said Hobbs. “He’s really moving well and obviously came into camp with a desire to be a contributor. God made him a big dude, and if he can consistently get that big body moving forward, the defense is going to have a hard time dealing with him.”
