Palo Pinto Press Columnist

Hi Y’all! Sue Overton here. Really happy to be talking to you through this new newspaper! Glad to have a paper-n-ink newspaper back in the county!

First, I want to introduce myself. Again, my name is Sue Carroll Overton, born and raised in Mineral Wells and lived there all my life until 10 years ago when I married an old cowboy and moved to a ranch in Palo Pinto.

A year ago, we moved to the “old home place” in Lone Camp. For those of you who don’t know where Lone Camp is, it is halfway between Palo Pinto and Santo. If you don’t know where those are, Google it! Ha!

I graduated from Mineral Wells High School in 1967 and attended Tarleton (where I majored in cowboys) and Weatherford College where I majored in Emergency Medical Tech. I have two grown children, and between Husband and I, we have seven wonderful and beautiful grandchildren.

I am a member of the First Methodist Church, Mineral Wells High School Fifty Year Club, involved with Back Pack Buddies, The Center of Life, and the Santo ISD Booster Club.

My maternal grandparents go back to 1913 in Mineral Wells and my paternal grandmother goes back to the 1800’s in Soda Springs just across the line in Parker County. (More about these characters in future columns.)

So, I think I will be able to talk to you about our beautiful county, past, present, and future. My intentions with this column will be to inform you of different things: happenings around the county, present and future; occasionally some interesting history of this place we call home; interesting facts and some interviews with residents; all with a little humor thrown in from time to time.

I am so looking forward to visiting with some of you in the future and hope I can be an asset to this publication and to my beloved home.

School has started for all students in our county now. It’s still pretty hot but always is at this time of year in Texas.

I’m sure the athletes are feeling that more than anyone else! Football games have started even though it doesn’t feel like football weather yet.

How ‘bout this four-day school week? Many are loving it and some are not. Some of y’all that have children going to school only four days a week for the first time, let me know how it’s going.

For those of you who are in the mood for a little football, here are a few games from the area:

Strawn High School (6 man) will be playing Jayton Aug. 27.

Gordon High School (6 man) will be playing Throckmorton Aug. 26.

Santo High School will be playing Electra Aug. 26 and

Mineral Wells High School will be playing Castleberry Aug. 26.

All these games are out of town except Mineral Wells. Go on out to Ram Stadium and enjoy that game. I will have some scores and possible highlights here next week to let you know how our county teams are doing.

The summer of 2022 should go down in the weather history books! I know we have had hotter summers but can’t remember when. So glad that the temperature has cooled down and I’m certainly praying for rain. Hope you are too!

Last but not least, we have a centurion birthday in Mineral Wells this month! Happy 100th birthday to Johnny Abbott! He still lives by himself unless you are counting Charley, his dog. Johnny, we all wish you the best in the coming year! God bless!

Well, here is your first edition of Palo Pinto Press. Hope you enjoy it and subscribe to it. I plan on being here every week.

If there is something interesting you think I should know about or should write about (no politics or religion), please contact me at sueo2012@yahoo.com.

I’ll be talkin’ to ya!
